Lovie Smith sees positives in Mike Glennon, won’t commit to naming a QB

Smith praised Glennon’s arm, pocket precision and decision-making as a rookie with the Buccaneers.

New Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith won't commit to a starting quarterback for the team, but he did have some praise for 2013 third-round pick Mike Glennon, who started 13 games and finished with an 83.9 passer rating as a rookie. At his introductory news conference on Monday, Smith was complimentary of Glennon:

“Strong arm and he had great pocket presence, to me,” Smith said. “Mike won’t win a 40-yard sprint, but he can move around in the pocket good enough and make smart decisions, and there’s nothing like having that experience that he was able to get his rookie year.”

Glennon, 24, took over for the Buccaneers in Week 4 after Josh Freeman led the team to a 0-3 start before he was benched in favor of the rookie. While the team finished with the fewest passing yards in the NFL, Glennon threw 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions, getting sacked 40 times.

In Smith's nine seasons with the Bears, he worked most with Jay Cutler, Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman. The Bears won the NFC Championship Game with Grossman at the helm in 2006, before losing in the Super Bowl to the Indianapolis Colts.

Grossman finished the 2006 regular season with 23 touchdowns, 20 interceptions and a 73.9 passer rating.
