Jerry Jones doesn’t regret passing on Johnny Manziel, Alex Mack could be out for season
The Browns also lost defensive end Armonty Bryant for the season to an ACL tear.

One of the dominant storylines of the 2014 NFL Draft was the fall of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. Every team in the top 10 passed on Manziel, at which point the buzz grew that the Dallas Cowboys might select the Texas native with the No. 16 pick. Every camera in the Cowboys’ war room focused on Jerry Jones, the team’s owner and de facto general manager. Jones’ affinity for Manziel was well known, and it seemed possible the former Heisman Trophy winner would end up in silver and blue.
Yet, Dallas selected Notre Dame's Zack Martin instead, eschewing a shiny new quarterback in favor of reinforcing the offensive line. With the Cowboys now 5-1 and Tony Romo playing well, Jones says he has no regrets about the way the draft played out. Furthermore, he doesn't even want to discuss Manziel, saying "It is not relevant, and I really have had some very stern, succinct instructions not to mention Johnny anymore from people who count." OK then, Jerry.
Jets place Dee Milliner on injured reserve
The New York Jets dropped to 1-5 on Sunday courtesy of their 31-17 defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos. It was the fifth consecutive loss for New York, which has only defeated the winless Oakland Raiders. Yet the bad news persists for the Jets, who learned today that cornerback Dee Milliner will miss the rest of the season.

— New York Jets (@nyjets) October 13, 2014 While Milliner has yet to play like a top-10 pick, he was one of the few capable cornerbacks on the Jets' roster. With him out for the remainder of 2014, the defense will be forced to lean on converted safety Antonio Allen and Darrin Walls in pass coverage, a suboptimal scenario for the New York.
Browns lose Alex Mack, Armonty Bryant
One of the top priorities for the Cleveland Browns this summer was to retain the services of center Alex Mack. The All-Pro center entered unrestricted free agency, though the Browns could match any offer by virtue of the transition tag applied to him in March. In the end, Cleveland matched a five-year, $42 million offer with the hopes of stabilizing the offensive line for years to come.
Instead, a broken left leg for Mack now has the Browns scrambling. An exact timetable for recovery remains unclear, though Mack will be placed on injured reserve and could miss the rest of the 2014 season. The complicating factor is whether there is ligament damage. If Mack managed to avoid any major tears, the recovery will be much smoother, but if it’s more severe than a broken fibula, he’ll be out the remainder of the year.
The news is more certain for Browns defensive end Armonty Bryant, who will miss the season as the result of a torn ACL suffered during Cleveland's 31-10 trouncing of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bryant was injured in the first quarter, and as the Cleveland Plain Dealer noted, he was hobbling about the locker room after the game with a large brace over his injured right knee.
Bryant becomes the second casualty along the Browns' defensive line, which will also be without defensive end Phil Taylor for the next few weeks. Minus those two, the team will be forced to rely on third-year players John Hughes and Billy Winn.
Danny Trevathan out multiple weeks
The Broncos moved to 4-1 on Sunday, but the win cost them starting weakside linebacker Danny Trevathan. According to the Denver Post, Trevathan will miss between three and six weeks while recovering from a crack near his left kneecap. Surgery will not be required to repair the damage.
Though the long-term outlook is good for Trevathan, the Broncos may still send him to short-term injured reserve. Should they elect to do so, the linebacker would be sidelined eight weeks. That should give Trevathan plenty of time to heal while not taking up a spot on Denver’s 53-man roster.
