Dolphins RB Knowshon Moreno out for season with ACL injury

Miami will be without Moreno for the rest of 2014 after he was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins are not off to the start they envisioned and now things are worse with the news that running back Knowshon Moreno is done for the year with an ACL injury, the team announced Tuesday. Moreno was brought in on a one-year contract this offseason to play alongside Lamar Miller, but Moreno only suited up for three games before sustaining elbow and knee problems.

Moreno looked like a great pickup in Week 1 against the New England Patriots, rushing for 134 yards and a touchdown on 5.4 yards per carry in Miami's victory. However, Moreno would only take one carry against the Bills the following week before leaving the game with a dislocated elbow. He was expected to miss 4-8 weeks, but came back after being unavailable for only two games.

Moreno came over from the Denver Broncos, who had originally selected him with the 12th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Moreno was considered a bust by most until he broke out in 2013 for a career-high 1,038 rushing and 548 receiving yards, amassing 13 total touchdowns.

With Moreno out for the rest of the season, Miller will become the featured back. Miller has answered the call thus far, averaging 5.2 yards per carry with 330 rushing yards. Miller also has 15 receptions out of the backfield and has scored four touchdowns, with the only drawback being three lost fumbles. The third-year pro out of Miami will occasionally be spelled by Daniel Thomas.

The Dolphins sit at 2-3 and will travel to take on the Chicago Bears this Sunday.
