Ben Roethlisberger a running quarterback?

Few expect to see design runs for Ben Roethlisberger, which is probably why he was able to fool the Texans.

NFL teams are utilizing more read-option plays in recent years, but when you think of the modern mobile NFL quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger is probably not a name that springs to mind. Russell Wilson or Colin Kaepernick? Sure. But Big Ben?

While he may not be the most mobile quarterback, Roethlisberger does have the element of surprise on his side. That is probably why he was able to pick up five yards when the Steelers called a read-option on the first play against Houston.

Roethlisberger chose to keep the ball himself, but he had other options. The play also had a built-in pop pass, which is another trend currently being used more in college and the NFL.
