Cowboys waive Michael Sam

The Dallas Cowboys parted ways with the former Missouri defensive end, according to the team’s web site.

Michael Sam is no longer with the Dallas Cowboys. The team waived him from their practice on Tuesday, Oct. 21, according to their official web site. The Cowboys will replace him with linebacker Troy Davis.

Dallas signed Sam to their eight-man practice squad prior to the season, on September 3. Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL, was originally drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Sam has yet to see action in a regular season game since joining the Cowboys practice squad. He spent training camp and the preseason with the Rams, finishing an impressive run of exhibition play with three sacks in four games.

Other NFL teams have 24 hours to put in a waiver claim for Sam. If he clears waivers, teams are free to sign him to their practice squad or active roster. The Canadian Football League is another option for the University of Missouri product and 2013 SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year. The Montreal Alouettes own his CFL free agent rights.

Sam thanked the Cowboys on Twitter Tuesday afternoon and vowed to continue his NFL career.
