Jay Cutler is a ‘3-5 quarterback right now’ says Bears GM

The pressure continues to mount on Cutler in Chicago and his general manager didn’t exactly go out of his way to defend him.

Jay Cutler is being heavily criticized in the wake of yet another Chicago Bears loss, and the general manager that signed him to a whopping offseason extension isn't sugar-coating anything, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

"We're a 3-5 team and he's a 3-5 quarterback right now," Phil Emery said in a Monday press conference a day after watching his team get blown out by the New England Patriots, their fourth loss in the last five weeks.

Cutler threw three touchdowns in the game, but two of them came after the Patriots took a 45-7 lead in the third quarter. Cutler also threw his eighth interception of the season and took three sacks.

“There are some things Jay is doing very well,” said head coach Marc Trestman, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. “He is functioning well play by play. There are things he needs to do better.”

Fans and critics have been vocal about Cutler’s need for improvement. Over 95 percent of respondents to an online poll by the Chicago Tribune claimed Culter is not an elite quarterback, and that was before the ugly loss to New England.

“He may not be the only problem, but I believe he’s the biggest problem with this team,” said NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner. “When he plays well, this team wins. When he doesn’t play well, this team loses because they’re based on offense ... The problem with Jay Cutler for me is the lack of consistency. He has only put together one game all year long where he’s been consistent first half to second.”

ESPN’s Keyshawn Johnson piled in on Cutler as well, saying “Lovie Smith, in my opinion, is not the Chicago Bears head coach today because of that quarterback.”

The good news for Cutler and the Bears is they get a bye week to get regrouped. When they emerge, they’ll immediately head to Green Bay and still have games against Detroit, Dallas and New Orleans left on their schedule. If they’re not careful, they’ll be out of the playoff hunt before Thanksgiving, and things will really get interesting in Chicago.
