Tony Romo was able to make a valiant, though unsuccessful, return to the field late in Monday night's loss to Washington but his status for this weekend is still up in the air. Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Romo is "day-to-day" and has not been ruled out Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals after a back contusion kept the quarterback out of practice on Thursday.
Tony Romo day-to-day, Rashad Jennings ruled out for Week 9
We take a look at injury updates to Romo, Jennings, Giovanni Bernard and Jason Verrett.

“We’ll see what Tony’s able to do, hopefully he responds well to it and we’ll reassess it in the morning,” Garrett told The Dallas Morning News. “He’s not ruled out for this game by any means. He’s getting himself mentally ready, he’s in the meetings, he’s a part of our football team. Hopefully as the week goes on he feels better and he can function and give him a chance to play.”
Romo said Wednesday that the pain was still the same as Monday, but that he’ll be able to play if it’s just a matter of pain tolerance.
Rashad Jennings ruled out for Week 9
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said his starting running back will sit out a third consecutive week, according to CBS Sports. The team had been hoping Jennings would be healthy coming out of its Week 8 bye.
“It’s not a matter of if I want to play. I’m dealing with reality, and the reality is I’m not ready,” said Jennings, who is battling a knee injury.
Rookie Andre Williams has been unremarkable filling in, rushing for 59 and 51 yards in his two starts.
Jason Verrett out indefinitely
Verrett will eventually need surgery to repair a torn labrum, but the San Diego Chargers are hoping he'll be able to put it off long enough to return to the field in 2014. The star rookie cornerback has been ruled out against the Miami Dolphins but could return sometime after the team's Week 10 bye, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The hope is that Verrett, who currently grades out as the league’s fourth-best corner at Pro Football Focus, will be able to play through the injury. He’s already done so for two games and played through a labrum tear in his other shoulder in his final year at TCU. But after sitting through the second half of last week’s game with his arm in a sling, he’ll need at least a couple weeks worth of rest.
The good news is that the Chargers should have their other starting cornerback on the field this week. Brandon Flowers, who sat out last week with a concussion, returned to practice on Thursday.
Giovani Bernard could miss Jags game
The Cincinnati Bengals running back missed his second practice of the week and is in danger of being held out Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to Richard Skinner of Enquirer Media.
Bernard was knocked out of last week's game with a hip pointer and is still battling a clavicle injury left over from Week 7. The team has been readying rookie Jeremy Hill for a potential start and preparing third-stringer Cedric Peerman for an increased role.
The decision to play Bernard could be affected by scheduling. The Bengals have to turn around on four days rest to play the Cleveland Browns next Thursday.
