Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback for the New York Jets in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, head coach Rex Ryan told press Sunday. Smith was benched earlier in the day during a 31-0 shutout loss to the San Diego Chargers.
Geno Smith named Jets starter for Week 6
After benching Geno Smith in favor of Michael Vick on Sunday, Rex Ryan named the second-year quarterback the Jets’ starter for Week 6 against the Denver Broncos.

Smith had a disaster outing, going 4-for-12 passing for 27 yards and an interceptions before getting hooked at halftime. Unfortunately for the Jets, Michael Vick wasn't any better behind center, going 8-for-19 for 47 yards and taking two sacks. The struggles of both passers may signal deeper offensive problems than the two quarterbacks for the Jets, though Smith's play certainly hasn't alleviated matters.
Through five games, the second-year passer is now 86-for-148 passing (58.1 percent) for 949 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions. Smith turned in relatively strong performance against the Oakland Raiders and Chicago Bears, but they were countered by shaky performances of equal weight. Sunday's performance against San Diego broke the Jets' patience, but Vick didn't give the coaching staff a good reason to make a permanent change.
