Derrick Shelby arrested, tased 3 times for resisting arrest

Shelby was suspended indefinitely by the Dolphins on Monday for a weekend incident that ended with the Dolphins defensive end in custody.

The Miami Dolphins suspended Derrick Shelby indefinitely on Monday, two days after the defensive end was arrested for a weekend incident in a Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. nightclub, according to Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post.

Shelby, 25, was allegedly “touching females” without their permission, according to the police report, before he was asked to leave by an officer. The report alleges that Shelby appeared intoxicated, refused to leave and resisted arrest shortly thereafter. He was subsequently arrested and charged with two misdemeanors of trespassing and resisting arrest without violence.

The 6’3, 248-pound defensive lineman was reportedly tased three times by police before he was successfully taken in to custody. Shelby’s attorney told the Palm Beach Post that the police used excessive force in the incident, leaving him with multiple bruises and marks on his face that were apparent in his mugshot. His attorney also maintained that Shelby is innocent but declined further comment following the release of the police report.

Shelby finished the 2013 season with 2.5 sacks and already has two sacks in 2014, both of which came against the Oakland Raiders in Week 4. Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said in a statement released on Monday that the team will make a final determination of discipline after it has "completed all of the necessary diligence."

David Canter, Shelby’s agent, released a statement on twitter that expressed disappointment in the Dolphins decision to indefinitely suspend Shelby. Canter stated that he spoke with Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey and that Shelby looks forward to continuing his playing career:
