Julius Thomas fined for chop block

Denver’s star tight end has been fined $8,268 by the NFL for his illegal chop block on Calais Campbell.

Denver Broncos tight end Julius Thomas has been fined $8,268 by the NFL for his illegal chop block on Arizona Cardinals defensive Calais Campbell in last Sunday's game, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. As a result of the hit, Campbell suffered an MCL sprain and missed most of the second half.

The league had confirmed on Monday that the hit was illegal, paving the way for the inevitable fine. The amount of $8,268 is the standard for a first fine, implying that the hit was not “the dirtiest play ever,“ as described by Cardinals coach Bruce Arians following the game.

On the play, Campbell was rushing off the right edge, and at the snap, Thomas dove into Campbell’s knees for the chop, which caused the injury and forced Campbell out of the game.

Campbell is expected to be out for at least a few weeks, depleting a Cardinals defense that had allowed the second-fewest points in the league before its 41-20 loss to the Broncos. Arizona does catch a break with an easy schedule the next two weeks, facing Washington and the Oakland Raiders, who are a combined 1-8 this season.
