The NFL's investigation of the Ray Rice domestic violence case could take "another several months" to be completed, according to New York Giants owner John Mara. Mara, who is one of two owners overseeing the investigation, gave an update of the process at the NFL owners meetings in New York on Monday.

The NFL came under heavy scrutiny in early September when TMZ released a video depicting Rice striking his fiancé Janay Palmer and knocking her unconscious. The footage reignited public uproar over the league’s tepid reaction to reports during the summer detailing those same events. Rice initially received only a two-game suspension for his actions. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell stated -- and has since maintained -- that the league had not seen the video prior to its release through TMZ, an argument contradicted by multiple reports.

To assuage the public’s concerns, Goodell hired former FBI director Robert Mueller to investigate the league’s handling of the controversy. While the objectivity of the investigation has been called into question, the findings remain of great interest to the public. Mara argues that more time will yield better results, saying, “We’re not trying to rush it. We want [Mueller] to be as thorough as possible.”

Goodell has stated his desire to wrap up the investigation prior to the Super Bowl, which kicks off February 1.
