Panthers vs. Eagles 2014 picks and predictions: Philadelphia should fly by fading Panthers

The Philadelphia Eagles host the Carolina Panthers for Monday Night Football.

The surging Philadelphia Eagles are back at home this week when they host the fading Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football. Philadelphia is 6-2 overall and 4-0 at home entering this game, and it is coming off an impressive 31-21 win at the Houston Texans.

What made it impressive was they did it with backup quarterback Mark Sanchez getting thrown into action after Nick Foles was sidelined with what was later determined to be a broken collarbone. That happened early in the contest, but Sanchez was able to lead the Eagles to the win after throwing for 202 yards and two scores in the 10-point win.

Carolina doesn't have any questions about its starting quarterback, as Cam Newton has been one of the few bright spots for the 3-5 Panthers. He's managed to account for 2,051 total offense yards and 10 scores, but the defense has been the team's weakness after being a strength a year ago.

The Panthers rank 26th in run defense, which is bad news with Philadelphia’s No. 8 rushing offense on deck in addition to their No. 5 passing offense. If Carolina is going to win this game, it will likely be in a shootout, which would make for an entertaining primetime affair.

The Eagles enter the game alone atop the NFC East with a 6-2 record, just a half game better than the second-place Dallas Cowboys at 7-3. The 3-5-1 Panthers are right behind the 4-5 New Orleans Saints in the NFC South. Needless to say, both teams have a lot to gain from a win this week.

So what are the experts saying about this matchup?

The CBS Sports crew is all-in on Philly with an 8-0 margin in favor of the home team. CBS Sports' Pete Prisco is going with the home team in a close one, 24-21, giving the following explanation:

The Eagles will be without Nick Foles, who is out with a broken clavicle. That means Mark Sanchez is in as the starter. I think he will be fine in this system. The Panthers are 25th in total defense, so he will get his shots. Cam Newton will do some good things to keep up, but will come up short.

On the other hand, the SB Nation staff favored the Eagles by a 7-1 margin.
