NFL standings and playoff picture: Detroit, Cleveland among surprise contenders

The playoff picture is coming into view, but there are a lot of big games ahead in 2014.

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports

Aside from the Monday Night Football matchup between the Carolina Panthers and the Philadelphia Eagles, Week 10 is now in the books. There was a lot of exciting action on Sunday, especially given how close a lot of the divisional races around the league are at this point in the season.

No team has an insurmountable division lead, leaving most teams still in the playoff hunt. The AFC North is a great example of this, though the division had its first big shakeup of the week on Thursday, when the Cleveland Browns dominated the Cincinnati Bengals en route to a victory and a share of first place in the division. The Browns join the 8-1 Arizona Cardinals as one of the major surprise teams of 2014.

Here is a complete look at where the teams stand through Sunday.

AFC North

W L T PF PA
Cleveland 6 3 0 209 172
Cincinnati 5 3 1 197 211
Pittsburgh 6 4 0 261 239
Baltimore 6 4 0 261 181

As noted above, the Browns took down the Bengals on Thursday Night Football, which temporarily put them into a tie for first place in the AFC North with the Steelers. Then the New York Jets shocked Pittsburgh on Sunday, and now Cleveland is leading the division all by itself.

AFC East

W L T PF PA
New England 7 2 0 281 198
Buffalo 5 4 0 191 182
Miami 5 4 0 227 171
NY Jets 2 8 0 174 265

The Patriots are leading the way in the AFC East, but right behind them is a logjam, with both Buffalo and Miami fighting for a wildcard spot. Both teams had tough losses on Sunday - Buffalo losing to the Chiefs, Miami to the Lions.

AFC South

W L T PF PA
Indianapolis 6 3 0 290 211
Houston 4 5 0 206 197
Tennessee 2 7 0 144 223
Jacksonville 1 9 0 258 282

Indianapolis will only face three teams with a winning record before the end of the season and look to be on the way to clinching the division title. Houston has a tougher road to a potential wild-card spot, traveling to Cleveland and hosting Cincinnati before a big game in Indianapolis. The Texans will also host the Ravens in December.

AFC West

W L T PF PA
Denver 7 2 0 286 202
Kansas City 6 3 0 217 151
San Diego 5 4 0 205 186
Oakland 0 9 0 146 252

Denver has wins against every team in its division, but will have to travel to Kansas City and San Diego in November and December. The Chiefs have a difficult road ahead, with home games against Seattle and Denver to go along with trips to Arizona, Pittsburgh and San Diego. The game against San Diego should have plenty of playoff implications.

NFC North

W L T PF PA
Detroit 7 2 0 182 142
Green Bay 5 3 0 222 191
Minnesota 4 5 0 168 199
Chicago 3 6 0 194 277

Detroit is one of the surprises of 2014, with a top-ranked defense supporting Matthew Stafford, Megatron and the offense. But, Green Bay is right behind them, winning big against Chicago at home before welcoming the Eagles to Green Bay next week and heading to Minnesota to take on the Vikings.

NFC East

W L T PF PA
Philadelphia 6 2 0 234 177
Dallas 7 3 0 261 212
NY Giants 3 6 0 195 247
Washington 3 6 0 197 229

Philadelphia and Dallas will be battling for the division title for the rest of the season, and Dallas will head to Eagles territory in December. Behind them, New York and Washington will need major rallies to get back into the mix.

NFC South

W L T PF PA
New Orleans 4 5 0 251 225
Carolina 3 5 1 177 236
Atlanta 3 6 0 219 238
Tampa Bay 1 8 0 167 272

Welcome to the worst division in football, where New Orleans leads but has a losing record after an overtime loss to San Francisco at home on Sunday. Carolina will attempt to move past the Saints with a win over Philadelphia on Monday Night Football.

NFC West

W L T PF PA
Arizona 8 1 0 223 170
Seattle 6 3 0 240 191
San Francisco 5 4 0 195 202
St. Louis 3 6 0 163 251

Arizona is leading the division, but lost quarterback Carson Palmer to a potentially season-ending knee injury on Sunday in a win against St. Louis. Seattle seems to have righted the ship with a huge game from running back Marshawn Lynch and the offense against New York. San Francisco is also still in a mix after beating the Saints, and St. Louis could make some noise if it can get wins over Denver, San Diego or Arizona.
