Jordan Cameron could miss season, Giovani Bernard out against Saints

Catch up on the latest injury news heading into the weekend, including updates on Vontaze Burfict, Doug Martin and Reggie Bush.

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

Tight end Jordan Cameron will not play for the Cleveland Browns this weekend. In fact, he may not play again this season.

Cameron has been ruled inactive this Sunday against the Houston Texans, marking his third consecutive missed game. But the concussion he's trying to overcome -- his third in the last two years -- may have even longer effects. When asked whether Cameron will be able to return in 2014, coach Mike Pettine told Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, "You don't know. It's a touchy subject."

There is certainty on nose tackle Phil Taylor: Pettine said he has been placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. The Browns are still waiting to hear about the status of safety Tashaun Gipson, who is listed as questionable for this weekend with a concussion.

Bernard and Burfict out for Cincy

In other AFC North injury news, the Cincinnati Bengals will once again be missing their star linebacker and starting running back. Vontaze Burfict (knee) and Giovani Bernard (hip/collarbone) have both been ruled out against the New Orleans Saints.

Burfict will miss his third straight game since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery but is nearing his projected return date. He'll be replaced at linebacker by Vincent Rey, who ranks third on the team in tackles.

Bernard will be replaced by rookie Jeremy Hill, who has sandwiched two mediocre games around a 154-yard, two-touchdown explosion while filling in as the starting running back.

Doug Martin out

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin has been declared inactive for a third consecutive week. The ankle injury he's battled since Week 8 is improving, but not quickly enough to put him on the field against Washington, head coach Lovie Smith said.

“Doug has made a lot of progress but he won’t play this week,” Smith told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. “He’s just not healthy. He’s hurt. He’s making progress.”

In Martin's absence, the Bucs have been going with a timeshare between Bobby Rainey, Charles Sims and Mike James. Rainey and Sims each carried the ball 10 times apiece last week, with James getting four totes.

Reggie Bush misses practice

Running back Reggie Bush missed Detroit Lions practice for a third consecutive day on Friday, and Kevin Patra of NFL.com "would be surprised if Bush played against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday."

Bush has battled ankle issues all season, one of the major reasons why he has just 191 rushing yards and one touchdown. Given his inability to fight off the injury, it would seem prudent for the Lions to give him a week off to fully recover, especially considering that playing Calvin Johnson through an ankle injury backfired on them earlier this season.
