Ahmad Bradshaw has broken ankle, per report

The Colts will have to rely on Trent Richardson and Dan Herron to lead the rushing attack.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

The Indianapolis Colts lost big to the New England Patriots Sunday night. Unfortunately, Indy also lost running back Ahmad Bradshaw, as the team's leading rusher suffered a broken ankle in the defeat, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bradshaw, 28, found no success against the Patriots’ defense, managing just four rushing yards on seven attempts and seven receiving yards on four receptions. In the fourth quarter, Bradshaw was given the ball on two consecutive goal-line rushing attempts, but couldn’t get in either time and suffered the ankle injury on the second of two attempts.

The severity of the injury is not yet known and Bradshaw will reportedly undergo more testing to determine if surgery will be a necessity to repair the ankle.

With Bradshaw out of the lineup, the brunt of the Indianapolis rushing attack will be placed on the shoulders of Trent Richardson, who already leads the Colts in carries. It will also likely mean an increased workload for third-year running back Dan Herron, who has 74 rushing yards on 22 carries in 2014.

Herron’s 3.4 yards per carry match the mark set by Richardson so far in 2014, but both pale in comparison to the 4.7 yards per attempt that Bradshaw compiled through the first 11 weeks of the year.
