Robert Griffin III is perpetually under scrutiny, but especially this week after seemingly calling out teammates after Washington's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Griffin also criticized his own play, but his "it takes 11 men" set off responses from his head coach and media, alike. Tuesday, Steve Young went on the Michael Kay Show and added his thoughts, via Pro Football Talk:
Steve Young thinks RG3 doesn’t work hard enough
Young chimed in on the Robert Griffin III situation in Washington. It wasn’t nice.
“I’ve talked to his previous coaches, people I really trust and admire, that know quarterbacks,” Young said. “He doesn’t put the time in.”
Griffin is coming off a poor performance. He went 23 for 32 passing for 207 yards against the Bucs, but also threw two interceptions to his lone touchdown pass, and Washington managed just seven points against the league's 30th-ranked scoring defense. Fans booed the performance, and chanted "We want Colt" for Colt McCoy, the backup quarterback who led Washington to two of its three wins this season.
Like Griffin now, Young had to struggled early in his career. His USFL days behind him, Young went 3-19 in his first 19 NFL games playing for the Bucs before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers. After sitting behind Joe Montana for four seasons, Young emerged as one of the league's best passers. He said that learning not to rely on his athleticism helped him become a better player.
“Success is really about expertise,” Young said. “May, June, July work, and going to school.
“Guys that can use their legs, it’s like they’re not desperate. Guys who can’t use their legs are more desperate so they’ll put more time in.”
