Green Bay’s dynamo offense looks for another win against Minnesota.
Perhaps no team in the NFC has looked as terrifyingly unstoppable as the Packers the past two weeks. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has gone off in both games, helping Green Bay to back-to-back scores of 50 or more points for the first time in the 94-year history of the franchise. While the offense gets most of the credit, defensive coordinator Dom Capers has outmaneuvered opponents, forcing seven turnovers during that span while yielding an average of 17 points. In the process, the Packers have moved into a tie for first place in their division and a three-way tie for second place in the conference.
Though it didn't affect the Vikings roster, Adrian Peterson's unsuccessful grievance over his placement on the commissioner's exempt list created any number of actual distractions for the franchise. Players like Teddy Bridgewater have been bombarded with questions about Peterson's actions all over again, creating an unusual environment. Regardless, the team did make some changes at running back, adding Ben Tate off waivers. He joins a backfield consisting of Jerick McKinnon and Matt Asiata.
No quarterback has played at a higher level the past two weeks than Rodgers. The MVP candidate has thrown nine touchdowns against no interceptions while racking up 656 passing yards. The prime beneficiaries have been receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. Nelson sits just two receiving yards shy of 1,000 (most in the NFC) while Cobb leads all wideouts in touchdowns with 10. Running back Eddie Lacy has seen his role in the offense expand, catching six passes for 114 yards against Green Bay's last two opponents.
Without Peterson to eat up carries, McKinnon has slowly carved out a regular role in the Vikings offense. He leads the team with 98 carries for 484 yards. However, Norv Turner prefers Asiata, the more slow-footed bruiser, near the goal line. There he has scored six touchdowns on the ground. In the passing game, veteran Greg Jennings remains the top receiver. He leads the teams in receptions (36) and receiving yards (463) and is tied for the lead in plays of 20 yards or more (5). Though it's been an inconsistent year for the defense, Everson Griffen has blossomed into a star. He's already set a career high with nine sacks and is on pace for five more.
The Packers enter Sunday’s game with a record of 7-3. The Vikings come in at 4-6.
