Lovie Smith's first year as Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach has been a mostly dour endeavor. However, he can exact some personal payback against his former team the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
Buccaneers vs. Bears 2014: Online streaming, time, TV schedule and radio
Lovie Smith returns to Soldier Field for the first time since Chicago fired him in 2012.
Like much of the NFC South, the Buccaneers have not fared well, losing the majority of their games. The team has alternated between veteran quarterback Josh McCown and inconsistent youngster Mike Glennon. Behind them, Tampa features one of the league's most disappointing group of running backs with Doug Martin once again falling short of the expectations he set during his phenomenal rookie year. Bobby Rainey has shown flashes of competency, but he too hasn't done enough to hold onto the starting job. The lone bright spot for the offense has been first-round pick Mike Evans. The talented 6'5 wideout has already become the team's top target in the passing game.
Chicago entered the season with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations only to see them crumble one Jay Cutler interception at a time. The offense, one of the league's best a year ago, has been stymied by injuries to pass catchers Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and Martellus Bennett, as well as by the play calling of head coach Marc Trestman. Coming off the bye two weeks ago, Trestman's team was steamrolled by the division rival Green Bay Packers, trailing 42-0 at halftime. The shortcomings have raised questions about the coach's future with the Bears, though management has publicly backed him.
Evans currently leads all rookie receivers in both receiving yards (794) and touchdowns (seven). He has become the Buccaneers' most reliable big play threat, averaging more than 17 yards a catch and registering an incredible 17 plays of 20 or more yards. Vincent Jackson's numbers are down from previous years, but the veteran wideout is still second on the team with 561 yards. On defense, weakside linebacker Lavonte David has put together another strong year, compiling 115 tackles and 16 tackles for loss. Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has also played well, leading the team with 6.5 sacks.
After a breakout 2013 campaign, Jeffery's productivity has regressed. Still, his 55 catches for 761 yards are both team highs, putting him on pace for his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. Running back Matt Forte is quietly having the best year of his career. Through 11 weeks, he has run for 733 yards and caught 67 passes for 575 more. If Forte sees a slight uptick in his receiving numbers, he will become the first player since Roger Craig to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.
The Buccaneers enter Sunday’s game with a record of 2-8. The Bears come in at 4-6.
