Ryan Mallett out for season with torn pectoral muscle

The Texans will now turn back to Ryan Fitzpatrick as starting quarterback.

Houston Texans quarterback Ryan Mallett has a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the rest of the season, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. Mallett will undergo surgery after an MRI Monday confirmed the tear.

It's unclear when Mallett suffered the injury, with one report claiming it happened during pregame warmups on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals while another said it occurred the previous week against the Cleveland Browns. Either way, Mallett toughed it out and played the entire game Sunday. The malady appeared to affect Mallett, who saw a significant dropoff in his second game as the Texans' starter. After going 20-of-30 for 211 yards, two touchdowns and one pick in a win over the Browns, the longtime New England Patriots backup completed just 21 of his 45 passes for 189 yards, no scores and one interception in Week 12. His accuracy was faulty as he routinely overthrew open receivers.

With Mallett down, the Texans are forced to turn back to Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was benched in favor of Mallett in Week 11 after an underwhelming start to his Houston career. Fitzpatrick came over from Tennessee as a free agent in the offseason and went 4-5 as the starter, throwing 11 touchdowns to eight picks and posting a passer rating of 87.1.
