Packers sign Mike McCarthy to contract extension

Green Bay has locked up its head coach for the foreseeable future.

The Green Bay Packers have announced a contract extension with head coach Mike McCarthy, per a team announcement. Terms of the deal are currently unknown.

“We are very happy to extend our relationship with Mike,” general manager Ted Thompson said in a team statement. “Over the past nine years, he’s provided great stability and consistency to the Packers organization and our community as an excellent coach and leader. He’s a good man and we look forward to the future with Mike as our head coach.”

McCarthy was hired back in 2006 to take over the Packers and has done a splendid job. The former offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers won a Super Bowl with Green Bay in 2010, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers. McCarthy broke into the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs under Marty Schottenheimer in 1993 as an offensive quality control assistant, the same season Joe Montana and Marcus Allen showed up.

McCarthy has an overall record of 87-48-1 as a head coach, leading Green Bay to the playoffs in every year of his career except for the 2006 and 2008 seasons. During his eight years with the Packers, McCarthy has won four NFC North titles, including the last three, and holds a career 6-5 record in the playoffs. Against teams in the NFC North, McCarthy is 32-11-1.

McCarthy is now only five wins behind Vince Lombardi (98, including playoffs) for second place on the Packers’ all-time coaching wins list. Including his own playoff victories, McCarthy is currently at 93. First place will remain out of reach for some time, since Curly Lambeau had 212 victories.

The Packers are 5-3 this season, just one game back of the Detroit Lions for first place in the division. They have also won four of their last five games heading into their Week 10 contest against the Chicago Bears.

Joe Philbin has started the McCarthy coaching tree, taking a head coaching job with the Miami Dolphins in 2012. Philbin's Dolphins are 5-3 this season and tied with the Buffalo Bills for second place in the AFC East.
