The Miami Dolphins will head into Monday Night Football with plenty at stake. The Dolphins are 6-5 and trying to keep pace in the AFC wild card race. The New York Jets? They're just waiting for the season to end. Several AFC teams sit at 7-5 and tied for the final wild card spot. The Dolphins could join the group with a win, but a loss would leave them needing to jump five teams to make the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Miami’s looking to stay alive in the AFC East playoff race; New York’s hoping to play spoiler.

Despite losing a close game last week in Denver, the Dolphins have been one of this season's pleasant - if somewhat inconsistent - surprises. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill has played well, throwing 20 touchdowns to just eight interceptions and nearly 2,600 yards passing. In his last four games, he completed 70 percent of his targets. A big part of the Dolphins' success has been their offensive line, which has contributed to the team having just three games with less than 100 yards rushing. However, lineman Ja'Wuan James was hurt against the Broncos and might not be available Monday night. On defense, the fifth-ranked Dolphins' defense is coming off of its worst performance of the season, allowing four passing touchdowns and 201 yards rushing - both season highs - against Denver. There are some concerns about the secondary, but Cortland Finnegan is returning (though he may not play) and the Dolphins signed cornerback R.J. Stanford during the week to shore up the unit.
For the Jets, 2014 has been a season to set on fire and heave into a lake. New York is 2-9 for a reason - whether its terrible quarterback play by Geno Smith or Michael Vick (they're last in the league in passing yardage), or bad defense (they're 28th in the league in points allowed). But, there are a few bright spots including the rush defense which is among the best in the NFL, and they could stymie the Miami run game at the line of scrimmage.
The Dolphins seemingly have everything to play for while the Jets are just going through the motions. In this rivalry, however, stranger things have happened.
