Cam Newton released from hospital

The Panthers quarterback is out of the hospital a day after he was involved in a car crash.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was released from a Charlotte hospital Wednesday, a day after he was involved in a car crash, according to Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer. Newton sustained two minor fractures in his lower back and stayed overnight at the hospital.

The quarterback's truck flipped at least three times before landing on its side in the two-car crash. The police did not deem Newton at fault for the wreck and neither driver was ticketed, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.

Although nothing is official yet, it's unlikely that Newton will play Sunday when Carolina hosts the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At 4-8-1, the Panthers are still in the playoff picture and trail the 5-8 New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons for first place in the NFC South by just a half a game. If Newton is held out this week, backup quarterback Derek Anderson would get the start. Anderson also started in Week 1 at Tampa Bay after Newton was held out while recovering from offseason ankle surgery.

The injury Newton sustained is the same back injury that Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered earlier this season. Romo missed one game before he was able to play again.
