Jets vs. Titans 2014 picks and predictions: Experts favor New York

The New York Jets and Tennessee Titans will both fight for their third win on Sunday. Experts generally favor the Jets in the matchup.

Both the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans are out of the playoff race, with 22 losses combined between the two. There's not a whole lot left to play for, though the Titans at least are not looking at an offseason in which they'll be searching for an entirely new coaching staff. Rex Ryan isn't fired yet in New York, but once the season comes to an end, he's expected to be cut loose after multiple losing seasons.

Both teams are 2-11 on the season, with the Jets holding an 0-6 record on the road. The Titans' wins came in Week 1 and Week 6, so they're riding a seven-game losing skid, while the Jets managed to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10, so they've lost their last three games. We can't even say that the Jets are fighting for Ryan's job, because there isn't a soul who thinks he's got a chance to remain in charge heading into the offseason.

The Jets show well on paper in some key areas, which is one of the reasons they’re such a frustrating team. They rank No. 2 in the league in rushing yards at 149.7 rushing yards per game on average, and fifth against the run, allowing 87.4 rushing yards per game. They’re also 15th in pass defense. The biggest struggles have come in the passing game, where they’re dead last with just under 170 passing yards per game.

The Titans, on the other hand, don’t show well in any category. They’re 22nd, 27th, 19th and 32nd in passing offense, rushing offense, passing defense and rushing defense, respectively. The Jets look like a much better team on paper but that hasn’t translated into more than a couple wins.

That said, the experts aren’t unanimous in picking the Jets and their “better on paper” team. Eight of the 13 experts picking for ESPN are going with the Jets. At CBS Sports, it’s not quite as split, with seven of the eight experts picking New York to get back into the win column. Four of the six experts at FOX Sports are going with the Jets as well.

Here at SB Nation, just three of the experts are going with the Titans to win, with the other five picking New York.
