DeMarco Murray will undergo surgery on broken hand

The NFL’s leading rusher has not been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Colts, however.

DeMarco Murray leads the NFL in rushing and has an outside chance of reaching the 2,000-yard mark. For that to happen, he'll need to play through a broken bone in his hand, according to Cowboys COO Stephen Jones.

Speaking Monday on 105.3 The Fan, Jones stated that Murray broke a bone in his hand Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury will apparently require surgery, throwing his availability for next week's game into doubt.

Still, Jones refused to rule out a return this Sunday, saying "It's not something that if it responds well after surgery today, that he can't come back and play this weekend." Dallas plays the 10-4 Indianapolis Colts.

Murray's 14 appearances in 2014 ties his career high for games played in a season. His 11 touchdowns are already a new personal best, and his 1,687 yards rushing exceed his previous high mark by over 500 yards. He set an NFL record earlier this year for most 100-yard rushing games to open a season with eight. At that time, a 2,000-yard season appeared likely. While it's still possible for Murray to reach that milestone, he would need to average just over 156 yards over the Cowboys' final two games. Of course, that assume he can play in them with his hand injury.

If Murray cannot play, Jones said it would be Joseph Randle, not Lance Dunbar, who would take the bulk of the carries.
