Jon Gruden signs extension with ESPN, won’t return to coaching any time soon

Jon Gruden’s long-term extension with ESPN will keep him from being in the discussion about potential coaching positions.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden signed a huge contract extension with ESPN, keeping him with the network through the duration of their Monday Night Football contract. The news was announced during halftime of the game Monday between the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears. This will effectively kill any potential rumors of Gruden returning to coach in the league any time soon, a couple weeks before those rumors were about to get out of control as the regular season comes to an end.

The extension will keep him with the network through the 2021 season, which is when the Monday Night Football contract expires for ESPN. There hadn’t been any big rumors about him potentially returning to coaching this offseason, but it always seems like he’s linked to every team looking to fill a head coaching vacancy each and every offseason.

Gruden was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1998-2001, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2002-08, where he won Super Bowl XXXVIII over the Raiders. He's been with ESPN since 2009.
