The Baltimore Ravens have managed to keep their heads above water in the competitive AFC North. They face one of their biggest challenges of the season this week as they travel to Houston to take on J.J. Watt and the Texans.
Ravens vs. Texans 2014: Online streaming, time, TV schedule and radio
J.J. Watt continues to make his MVP case against Baltimore.
While the Minnesota Vikings sank after the scandal that engulfed their star running back, the Ravens fared remarkably well despite the Ray Rice controversy persisting throughout the year. Baltimore sits in third place in its division, only a half game separates it from the No. 1 spot. The team has won four of its last five games, including tough road wins against the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints.
Leading the charge for Baltimore has been tailback Justin Forsett. A journeyman for most of his career, Forsett topped 1,000 yards for the first time this season. His 5.4 yards per carry also ranks amongst the best qualified rushers in the NFL. Another newcomer has led the team at the receiver position; 35-year-old Steve Smith Sr. needs just 74 receiving yards over the final two weeks of the season to reach 1,000. If he does, it'll be the eighth time he's reached that milestone in his illustrious career.
Though the Texans feature one of the league's best players in Watt, the offense has kept the team from truly competing this year. Ryan Fitzpatrick, signed as a free agent in the offseason, was benched for poor performance midway through the season for Ryan Mallett. After Mallett's season ended with a torn pectoral, Fitzpatrick returned to the starting lineup. Unfortunately, the veteran lasted just three more weeks before a broken leg landed him on injured reserve. In the same game, rookie reserve Tom Savage suffered a knee injury that will keep him out for at least this week. The only quarterbacks left in Houston are Thad Lewis and Case Keenum; both players were not on the team's Week 1 roster.
The Texans' offense will rely even more on star running back Arian Foster. After a year in which injuries cut his season short, Foster is back in a big way. His 1,127 yards rushing lead the division, and his 4.9 yards per attempt is tied for the best mark of his career. But the biggest attraction in Houston is defensive end Watt. Despite playing as an interior lineman, Watt is a half sack away from leading the league. He also has by far the most touchdowns in 2014 for a primarily defensive player, with two coming via takeaways and another three coming on offense.
The Ravens enter the game with a record of 9-5. The Texans come in at 7-7.
