The Tennessee Titans are considering a trade for Jay Cutler and there may be mutual interest for the former Vanderbilt quarterback to return to Nashville, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Cutler was benched by the Chicago Bears earlier in the week and will watch from the sidelines when Jimmy Clausen makes his first start in four years against the Detroit Lions. Despite falling out of favor with the Chicago coaching staff, Cutler would prefer to stay with the Bears, although Tennessee is reportedly his favored location in the event that a trade occurs.
The Titans have shuffled between three starting quarterbacks in 2014 and appear to have given up on 2011 first-rounder Jake Locker. With Locker on injured reserve and Zach Mettenberger suffering from a shoulder injury, Charlie Whitehurst is the Titans' starter for now, but the team ranks 30th in the NFL in points scored.
A trade for Cutler would also mean the acquisition of his seven-year, $126.7 million contract signed in January which will pay the quarterback $15.5 million in 2015 unless a renegotiation of the contract occurs. Acquiring Cutler would also shake up the 2015 NFL Draft, with the Titans still very much in the running for the No. 1 overall selection.
Cutler leads the NFL in interceptions with 18, although he’s managed to rack up a career-best 28 touchdown passes. His 66.1 completion percentage is also the best of his career; however, according to Rapoport, Marc Trestman believes the best way to save his job is to prove that the team’s struggles in 2014 are due to Cutler and not his scheme. While Cutler grasped that scheme and performed well in practices, that didn’t translate to games and Trestman believes Clausen will have more success running his easy-to-understand offense.
The Bears finish the season with a home game against the Lions and a road trip to face the Minnesota Vikings.
