Lions vs. Packers 2014 picks and predictions: More Lambeau futility for Detroit

The Lions haven’t won at Lambeau Field since 1991.

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The last time the Detroit Lions won a game at Lambeau Field, Nirvana's Nevermind was the biggest album in America, George H.W. Bush was the president, and Brett Favre was the hard-partying backup quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. A lot has changed in the subsequent 23 years, but the Green Bay Packers' home dominance over the Lions has not. On Sunday, the two teams will battle for the NFC North crown and a bye in the playoffs.

The Lions won their first matchup with the Packers back in Week 3. Detroit held Aaron Rodgers and the high-powered Green Bay offense to a mere seven points. It was a coming out party for defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, who has produced a top-three defense in his first year with the team. While that unit has driven the Lions to their first playoff berth since 2011, the offense has been a disappointment. Despite a cavalcade of stars like Calvin Johnson, Matthew Stafford and Golden Tate, the Detroit ranks just 23rd in scoring, worst in the division.

As for the Packers, their season turned around after the loss in Detroit. Rodgers followed that game with four straight games of three or more touchdowns and no interceptions, and Green Bay rose to the top of the conference. The Packers remained there until an unexpected road loss to the Buffalo Bills allowed the Lions to sneak ahead of them in the standings. Still, they can regain NFC North supremacy on Sunday with a win.

The experts are nearly all in on the Packers this week. Every member of CBS Sports’ eight-man panel sees Rodgers and company taking the game and the division.

Here at SB Nation, it’s almost a clean sweep, with only one of our experts leaning toward the Lions.
