Drew Stanton is ‘day to day’ according to Cardinals’ GM

Arizona still doesn’t know if it’ll have its preferred quarterback under center for the postseason.

The Arizona Cardinals have played their last two games without starting quarterback Drew Stanton. According to the team's general manager Steve Keim, it remains unclear whether Stanton can return in time for the first round of the playoffs.

Speaking with Arizona Sports 98.7, Keim described Stanton's health as "day to day" while expressing optimism that he might return in time for the Cardinals' playoff showdown with the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. Stanton suffered a serious knee injury on Dec. 11 in St. Louis and has yet to practice since.

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians echoed Keim’s comments Monday, saying that Stanton could return later this week, per Kent Somers of AZCentral.com.

If Stanton cannot suit up, Arizona will once again roll with Ryan Lindley under center. Lindley started the previous two games, completing just 49.4 percent of his passes for 532 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. The team went 0-2 in Lindley's starts. The Cardinals' only other option at quarterback is Logan Thomas, a rookie who has attempted only nine passes in his young NFL career.

If Stanton’s injury keeps him out for the rest of year, it would be the second season-ending injury to an Arizona quarterback. Veteran Carson Palmer opened 2014 as the starter and, after missing four weeks with a shoulder injury, helped push the Cardinals to the best record in football. His Week 10 ACL tear marked the downturn in Arizona’s season. While they would eventually qualify for the playoffs, the Cardinals went 3-4 with Palmer on the sidelines.
