Washington could stick with Robert Griffin III in 2015, fire Jay Gruden per report

Robert Griffin III is once again at the center of a potential dispute between owner, general manager and coach.

Washington head coach Jay Gruden could be "one and done" with the team if he insists on moving on from quarterback Robert Griffin III heading into the 2015 season, according to a report from Jason Reid of The Washington Post. Griffin was benched by Gruden in favor of Colt McCoy when it became clear that Griffin wasn't able to execute the kind of offensive gameplan that Gruden likes to run. Namely, Griffin struggles to make reads from the pocket, and Gruden's offense relies on a pocket passer.

It’s a confusing situation when it comes to Gruden, general manager Bruce Allen and owner Dan Snyder. Last season, Mike Shanahan was ousted by Snyder in part because of a power struggle and a back-and-forth in the media between the two. Allen was given a pass because Shanahan was not his coach, while Snyder hitched the team to Griffin. Now, another coach wants to move on from Griffin, and it’s possible Snyder is still not willing to budge.

According to the report, Gruden “believes he needs a clean break from Griffin to focus on fixing Washington’s 3-9 mess,” and that could lead to him losing his job after just one season if Snyder and Allen believe Griffin should be the starter next season. Washington gave up an awful lot to acquire Griffin, trading multiple high-round picks to draft him. It looked like a good move at first when Griffin was named Offensive Rookie of the Year and took Washington to the playoffs in 2012, but it’s been all downhill from there.

Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see what happens with Griffin during the final weeks of the season. The two sides obviously have an opinion on what will happen and what can happen, so if we see Griffin getting his starting role back before the season’s end, it could signify that Snyder and Allen are calling the shots, and it could once again be the catalyst to Washington looking for a new head coach.
