The Detroit Lions sit just one game behind the Green Bay Packers in the NFC North standings. With just four games left, a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is likely a necessity if they hope to overtake their Wisconsin neighbors.
Buccaneers vs. Lions 2014: Online streaming, time, TV schedule and radio
Detroit fights to keep up in the NFC North while Tampa simply tries to look competitive.
There has been very little for the Buccaneers to celebrate in 2014. New head coach Lovie Smith was supposed to reestablish a dominant defense in Tampa along with a culture of winning. Instead, the team has lost all but two games this season. Worse, there doesn't appear to be a quarterback on the roster that the team can rely upon heading into 2015. Free agent addition Josh McCown has not replicated last year's success while youngster Mike Glennon hasn't shown any significant progress in his second year. Running back has also been a horror show with former first-round pick Doug Martin playing so poorly as to allow Bobby Rainey and Charles Sims to beat him out. The Buccaneers' shortcomings have led to speculation that the well-regarded Smith could be one-and-done in Tampa.
As for Detroit, they ended a two-game slide on Thanksgiving by beating Smith's former team the Chicago Bears. The Lions' defense establishing itself as one of the league's best units early in the season and hasn't relented. However, the offense continues to be a worry for head coach Jim Caldwell. Though they put up 34 points against Chicago, the Lions rank 25th in per game scoring. Matthew Stafford has played erratically and presents many concerns heading into December. If he cannot correct his inaccuracies and poor decision making, Detroit could miss out on the postseason.
Statistically, only wide receiver Mike Evans has stood out positively for the Buccaneers' offense. The rookie has amassed 890 yards and eight touchdowns through 12 games and appears to be the frontrunner for Offensive Rookie of the Year. That Evans has played so well with McCown and Glennon throwing him passes only enhances his stature. In the ground game, Rainey leads the team with 406 rushing yards at a 4.3 clip. He's the only rusher on the team with an above 4-yard average with 50 carries or more.
Rushing has been an issue all season for the Lions, with both Joique Bell and Reggie Bush falling below the 4-yard-per-carry mark. Bush hasn't played since Nov. 9 and it's unknown when he might return. The news is a little better at wideout where Golden Tate leads all Lions with 1,136 receiving yards. Though he missed several games with an ankle sprain, Calvin Johnson is now on track for roughly 1,000 yards. Should he reach that milestone, it'll be the sixth time doing so in his eight-year career.
The Buccaneers enter the game with a record of 2-10. The Lions come in at 8-4.
