Brian Hoyer not expected to return to Browns next season, per report

Hoyer’s departure would open the door for Johnny Football in Cleveland.

Brian Hoyer is the first Cleveland Browns quarterback in 20 years to have a winning record as a starter. However, barring a playoff run, Hoyer is not expected to return to the team next season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Hoyer's contract is up after the season and his departure will presumably give Johnny Manziel an opportunity to start next year. The Browns drafted the Heisman winner with the 22nd-overall pick last spring. While Manziel got his first significant playing time when he replaced Hoyer for the final three drives the Browns' 26-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills last week, Cleveland plans to stick with Hoyer for now. Manziel was 5-of-8 passing for 63 yards with a 10-yard rushing touchdown.

The Browns are currently one of six 7-5 AFC teams looking for the second Wild Card spot. Although Hoyer started the season strong, he’s completed only 50 percent of his passes with one touchdown and six interceptions in his last three games. Because the Browns remain in the playoff hunt, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reported Sunday players and coaches continue to support Hoyer as the quarterback for Cleveland’s final games.

Still, Manziel has received plenty of support from his teammates as well, and it wouldn't a surprise is if Cleveland decided to go all in on the rookie. Last month, Browns' general manager Ray Farmer said Manziel is a future starter for the team.
