Jadeveon Clowney could miss 9 months with microfracture surgery

The Texans linebacker only started two games during his rookie campaign.

Houston Texans linebacker Jadeveon Clowney is expected to be out nine months after undergoing microfracture knee surgery Monday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. It's a timeline that means Clowney might also miss the beginning of the 2015 season.

Clowney injured his knee in the team’s opening game against Washington and has experienced issues ever since. Texans general manager Rick Smith said the team knew that microfracture surgery was a possibility all along, but hoped lesser procedures would allow Clowney to play sooner.

Clowney traveled to Florida after missing the Texans game in Week 13 against the Tennessee Titans to visit with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who provided the second opinion needed for Clowney to agree to surgery. The procedure ends a frustrating season for everyone involved, but getting the pass rusher healthy has to be a top priority for the Texans heading into the 2015 season.

Clowney has endured a rough rookie season after being selected as the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He played in only four total games and started two on the season, with only seven total tackles and zero sacks to show for it. Unfortunately for Clowney, he hasn’t been able to get healthy all season long, which reportedly had the Texans frustrated.

Clowney finished his college career at South Carolina with 24 sacks.
