Browns hire Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator
The Browns have found their new man to replace Norv Turner, hiring former Redskins coach Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator.
The Cleveland Browns have hired Kyle Shanahan to be their new offensive coordinator, according to FOX Sports' Alex Marvez. He will be replacing Norv Turner, who left the team after just one year and went to the Minnesota Vikings. The hire almost didn't happen--according to Ian Rapoport, the Browns were "turned off" by his blunt and honest interview. They reconsidered just two days later. Shanahan will sign a three-year deal with the Browns, according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
Shanahan was previously the offensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins for four years alongside his father, head coach Mike Shanahan. Both men got fired at the end of the season when the Redskins finished 3-13. Before Washington, Shanahan worked with the Houston Texans for four years as a quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. He became the youngest offensive coordinator in the league when the Texans promoted him in 2008.
Despite the Redskins' struggles in 2013, Shanahan has had a strong record as an offensive playcaller, helping Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris develop in their rookie years. He inherits a Browns offense that has budding superstars in Josh Gordon and Cameron Jordan, but quarterback and the running game are major holes.
After firing Rob Chudzinski at the end of the season, it took the Browns over a month, but they finally have their new coaching staff together. Mike Petting is the new head coach and Jim O’Neil was brought on board to replace Ray Horton as defensive coordinator.
