Ryan Broyles injury update: Lions WR hopes to be ready for training camp

The former second-round pick has recently started running and jumping on the Achilles he ruptured last season.

Having released veteran Nate Burleson, the Detroit Lions are on the lookout for a target to pair with Calvin Johnson as part of their offseason rebuilding process. Ryan Broyles, a former second-round pick who has spent much of his time in Detroit on injured reserve, is hoping he'll be recovered from a ruptured Achilles in time to fill that role next season, according to Tim Twentymen of DetroitLions.com.

Broyles, who suffered the injury against the Dallas Cowboys less than two months into the 2013 season, says he plans to be ready by training camp in July.

”I’m hoping to hit the ground running. I’ll be about 10 months out in July so hopefully I’ll feel pretty good.

“Every day I’m getting stronger,” he said. “I’m four months out and can’t wait to see where I’ll be 10 months out. Right now I’m happy with my progress.”

Broyles is currently in Dallas rehabbing. He said he began jogging two weeks ago and recently started jumping and cutting again.

After setting the NCAA record for career receptions, Broyles joined the Lions as a second-round pick in 2012. Injuries have repeatedly prevented him from living up to expectations, however. He tore the ACL in his left knee late in his senior season at Oklahoma, then tore the ACL in his other knee during his rookie season in Detroit.
