Kirk Cousins trade rumors: Redskins unlikely to deal QB

Despite constant trade rumors since being drafted, it appears that Kirk Cousins will be staying in Washington.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has been a popular subject of trade rumors and speculation, but the Washington Post doesn't expect him to go anywhere this offseason. Cousins has maintained that he's open to a trade but is okay with staying on the Redskins.

Cousins was drafted by the Redskins in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. The selection was notable because the Redskins had already drafted Robert Griffin III to be their franchise quarterback, opening up the possibility of a trade from the outset of his Cousins' career. Those rumors perked up when he replaced an injured Griffin for two games and led the Redskins to a 2-0 record. Some thought the Redskins could even get a first-round pick for him.

Since then, interest has cooled on Cousins, particularly when teams actually saw him play this past season. He replaced Griffin down the stretch in an apparent audition, but it didn’t go so well. Through five games, Cousins completed just 52 percent of his passes for four touchdowns, seven interceptions and a paltry 5.5 yards per attempt while the Redskins lost their final eight games.

New head coach Jay Gruden hasn’t made any public comments about Cousins, although it’s likely he’ll keep him as a backup to Griffin and let go of third-stringer Rex Grossman. The first-round trade rumors were always a bit ridiculous, but whatever market Cousins may have had has evaporated after his poor showing in 2013. If Washington does decide to ship him out, they’ll be lucky to get more than a third day pick.
