NFL Draft 2014: Cowboys win coin flip with Ravens, will pick 16th

A tie in 2013 standing necessitated a coin flip. Baltimore now gets the No. 17 pick.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys won a coin toss on Wednesday morning to break a tie in draft order with the Baltimore Ravens. Dallas will now pick 16th in the 2014 NFL Draft, while Baltimore gets the No. 17 pick.

Both teams finished 8-8 last season and had the same opponents winning percentage of .484, necessitating the tiebreaker.

Barring a trade, the Cowboys will be using a No. 16 pick in the first round for the first time in franchise history. SB Nation's latest mock draft has them using the selection on Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. That same mock has Baltimore taking Clinton-Dix's teammate, left tackle Cyrus Kouandjio, a pick later. That would be the Ravens' earliest first-round selection since taking Haloti Ngata at No. 12 in 2006.

The Cowboys undoubtedly prefer the higher pick, but No. 17 has been good to them in the past. They used the 17th selection of the 1990 draft to pick up a running back by the name of Emmitt Smith.

Last year, the Buffalo Bills used the 16th pick on quarterback E.J. Manuel. The Pittsburgh Steelers used No. 17 on outside linebacker Jarvis Jones.
