Ravens OT Eugene Monroe will not give hometown discount

Baltimore is hoping to keep its left tackle, but it won’t come cheap.

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Ravens enter the offseason with a few specific goals in mind, with the re-signing of left tackle Eugene Monroe among the top of the list.

Recently, Monroe was upfront on WNST radio in Baltimore, saying he would not take a hometown discount to remain with the Ravens.

Monroe came over from the Jacksonville Jaguars via trade, solidifying the blind side for quarterback Joe Flacco. Monroe, the former No. 8 overall pick in 2009, is one of many Ravens free agents who are key players. Included in that list are defensive end Arthur Jones, tight end Dennis Pitta and middle linebacker Daryl Smith.

Baltimore is coming into the free agency period with $11.5 million of room underneath the cap. After restructuring Terrell Suggs' deal, the Ravens opened up another $4 million in cap space. Baltimore will not be able to keep all of its important free agents, but could sign Monroe if the price ends up being reasonable.

Monroe is the second-best tackle available on the market, only behind Branden Albert of the Kansas City Chiefs. Albert is also a former first-round pick from the University of Virginia and is expected to command between $7-9 million per year on a long-term deal.
