Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb is heading into a contract year and could find himself getting a big pay raise. He wants to work out a long-term extension with the Packers, but the team has yet to discuss one with him.

Entering the last year of his rookie contract, Randall Cobb would like to hammer out a long-term deal, but the Packers haven’t approached him yet.

Speaking with NFL Network, Cobb said that he would like to get a new deal done quickly so it doesn’t become a distraction during the 2014 season:
“I would definitely love that,” he said. “But unfortunately that won’t be my decision. That will be on the team to come to me with that decision.”
“I would love to get it out the way and not to have to worry about any of the conversations or answering any questions during the season that would take away from what we’re trying to do as a football team.”
A second-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, Cobb has quickly established himself as one of the top young receivers in the league. His breakout year came in 2012, when he recorded 80 catches for 954 yards and eight touchdowns and added 1,256 yards on returns. A broken leg kept him out for most of the 2013 season, but he came back in time for the regular-season finale and caught the game-winning touchdown that sent Green Bay to the playoffs.
Cobb is only 23 years old, and his next contract is not going to come cheap. The Packers are in a good cap situation, sitting on about $28.5 million of free money, according to Over The Cap. They would like to re-sign James Jones, who is a free agent this offseason, but they have tough decisions to make with Cobb and Jordy Nelson, who are both heading into contract years.
For now, the Packers could be content to sit on Cobb’s $812,648 salary and work out a deal after the offseason, but his price could skyrocket if he continues to improve as a receiver.
