Eagles expected to release WR Jason Avant

Philadelphia has a bevy of talented players on offense and might be letting one go to create some cap space.

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to release wide receiver Jason Avant, according to Jeff McLane of Philly.com.

Philadelphia general manager Howie Roseman has some very tough decisions to make this offseason, especially when it comes to the receivers. Both Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin are unrestricted free agents, with Cooper likely to command a decent salary on a multi-year deal. Maclin is more likely to take a one-year contract with incentives after missing all of last season with a torn ACL.

Avant, 30, is scheduled to make $3.9 million this season but if cut, would only have $710,000 of dead money. The Eagles are currently expected to have approximately $29 million in cap space, giving them ample room to retain all of their free agents should they wish.

Last year, Avant caught 38 passes for 447 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers were down from 2012, when he totaled 53 catches for 648 yards. Throughout his eight-year career, Avant has averaged 12.3 yards per catch.

If Avant is released, the Kansas City Chiefs will be one of the team's very interested in his services. Kansas City has Avant's old head coach in Andy Reid and wide receivers coach David Culley, who was with Avant in Philadelphia. McLane reports that Avant had a good relationship with Culley, and considering the Chiefs' need for a receiver, it could be a natural fit.

Free agency does not begin until March 11, the beginning of a new league year. Should Avant be released before then, he could be signed by a team prior to that date without penalty.
