NaVorro Bowman injury: 49ers LB has surgery

Bowman had surgery on Tuesday morning to repair the torn ACL in his left knee.

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker NaVorro Bowman had surgery on Tuesday to repair the ACL he tore in his left knee during the NFC Championship Game, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Bowman, 25, posted a picture on his Instagram account on Tuesday morning with the caption “Time for surgery.” The surgery was necessary to repair the ACL tear he suffered, although the MCL tear he suffered in the same knee will not need surgery to repair.

That’s good news, according to David Fucillo of SB Nation’s 49ers blog, Niners Nation:

Socalisteph will provide more details in the coming days, but simply put, having only a partial tear of the MCL means there is more stability for his ACL recovery. Had he fully torn both ligaments, the rehab would have been longer in part because the stability of the knee would be that much less. We saw this issue in part with Mario Manningham’s recovery from a torn ACL and PCL. The PCL is not the same as the MCL, but stability remained an issue. It is possible surgery might reveal more than the MRI showed, but we remain optimistic.

A third-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, Bowman started just one game as a rookie, but has since been named a first-team All-Pro in each of the last three seasons. In 2013, Bowman finished the regular season with a career-best five sacks, two interceptions and six forced fumbles, as well as two more sacks in the postseason.

No timetable has been provided yet for Bowman’s return to the field, but Maiocco says it is possible that he would be available in time for the beginning of the 2014 season.
