Buccaneers WR Mike Williams faces criminal mischief, trespassing charges

The Tampa wideout, who missed much of 2013 with a hamstring injury, is due in court February 24.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Williams has been charged with criminal mischief and trespassing in connection with a December incident, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Greg Auman. Both charges are misdemeanors. Williams' arraignment is scheduled for February 24.

Williams just completed the first year of a six-year, $40-million contract with the Bucs. He caught just 22 passes in 2013 before being placed on injured reserve in late October due to a hamstring injury.

As Bucs Nation writes, Williams was already thought to be on the chopping block before his current run-in with the law:

With reports surfacing last week that the former regime was contemplating releasing Mike Williams due to a supposed lack of focus on football while on injured reserve, this does not appear to be a good time for the receiver. At the same time, trespass and mischief charges aren’t usually too serious and shouldn’t result in a suspension, though he’ll undoubtedly face internal discipline, which the Bucs undoubtedly will not make public.

This is hardly Williams’ first problem away from the field. In 2008, he was dismissed from the Syracuse football program for academic issues. He later returned to the team, only to quit with four games left in the season. As a rookie with the Bucs, WIlliams was arrested for driving under the influence, though the charges were eventually dropped.
