Rodger Saffold returns to Rams after failed Raiders physical

Rodger Saffold isn’t going to the Raiders thanks to a failed physical, but the Rams are more than happy to bring him back on a new five-year contract.

Offensive lineman Rodger Saffold has failed a physical with the Oakland Raiders and the reported five-year, $42 million contract is now void, the team announced Wednesday. But Saffold has already found himself a new (old) team, agreeing to return to the St. Louis Rams on a five-year contract for $31.7 million, including 19.5 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Saffold’s injury history is no secret, but apparently, the Rams aren’t nearly as concerned about the situation as Oakland. The Raiders reportedly had issues with Saffold’s shoulder after conducting a physical, but the Rams had “no concerns whatsoever,” according to another tweet from Schefter.

Saffold spent four seasons with the Rams since being made a second-round pick in 2010, but his career has definitely been up-and-down to this point, thanks to injuries. He was supposed to be the team’s left tackle of the future, but knee, shoulder and pectoral injuries sidelined him and kept him off the field consistently. He started 44 games in his four years with St. Louis.

It's unclear where Saffold goes from here when it comes to where he starts along the offensive line. He started at right tackle, left tackle and right guard last season. He played some good football in relief of Jake Long on the left side, but he really excelled from the right guard spot. Most believe he can be a Pro Bowl player at that spot, so the Rams will definitely have some big decisions to make.

Oakland is now without a left tackle, though they have a big pile of money, for whatever that’s worth. Saffold was supposed to be the team’s big splash in free agency this year.
