Rodger Saffold failed Raiders physical with torn labrum, per report

The Saffold saga hasn’t died down quite yet, with reports surfacing that the tackle has a torn labrum and that’s why Oakland turned back on its five-year deal.

A successful physical was all that stood between Rodger Saffold and the Oakland Raiders from sealing a long-term contract earlier this week, but on Wednesday a torn labrum led the Raiders to rescind the deal, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s Vic Tafur.

Raiders owner Mark Davis was unhappy, per Tafur's sources, after he found out that Saffold would need surgery according to team doctors and would be out for a minimum of three months while resting. Oakland had similar injury missteps with 2013 first-round pick D.J. Hayden and quarterback Matt Flynn, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks last year.

Saffold turned back to his former team, the St. Louis Rams, and they apparently cleared him on the physical and signed the tackle to a five-year deal, though he is likely to play right guard. The Rams are still heavily connected to offensive tackle Greg Robinson with the second overall pick in May.

Oakland lost former left tackle Jared Veldheer in free agency to the Arizona Cardinals, and instead signed former Jets right tackle Austin Howard to a five-year deal late Tuesday night.
