Irsay faces four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance and one misdemeanor count of operating while intoxicated following a late Sunday night arrest in Carmel, Ind.
The NFL office has yet to make an official statement on the matter, but did confirm to Pro Football Talk on Monday morning that the league’s Personal Conduct Policy applies to team owners the same way it does to players.
All persons associated with the NFL are required to avoid conduct detrimental to the integrity of and public confidence in the National Football League. This requirement applies to players, coaches, other team employees, owners, game officials, and all others privileged to work in the National Football League.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will be approaching the issue of discipline for Irsay with care. As a man known for his efforts to crack down on player conduct through strict punishment, Goodell can’t afford to appear lax in his treatment of an owner in the same situation.
