Robert Griffin III will not wear knee brace in 2014

RGIII confirmed what most people already suspected since the end of the season--he won’t be wearing the knee brace in 2014.

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III gave one more sign that his surgically-repaired knee is 100 percent, confirming that he will not wear a knee brace in the 2014 season. Griffin still plans to discuss this matter with team doctors throughout the offseason.

Griffin has been sporting the brace ever since tearing his ACL in the 2013 Wild Card loss to the Seahawks. He made an intense effort to get ready for Week 1 of the season, but his knee wasn't quite healthy yet and the brace neutered a lot of his explosive running threat. The result was a disappointing sophomore campaign, in which his touchdowns and yards per attempt were down from his rookie year, while his interceptions increased from five to 12. He only rushed for 489 yards and lost four fumbles before being benched for Kirk Cousins the final three games of the year. The Redskins stumbled to a 3-13 record, getting coach Mike Shanahan fired in the process.

This isn’t the first time Griffin will be shedding a brace after one year. He wore it for a season in 2008 after tearing his ACL at Baylor. He will be working out in Arizona later this month and is expected to be 100 percent for the Redskins’ offseason program, where he’ll be working with new coach Jay Gruden for the first time. Gruden isn’t known for utilizing read-option plays in his offense, but he’s also never had a dual-threat quarterback with the talent level of Griffin. At his introductory press conference, Gruden said that he still wants to use Griffin as a runner and has no intention of turning him into a pure pocket passer.
