Jets sign Michael Vick, release Mark Sanchez

The Jets are parting ways with quarterback Mark Sanchez and signing Michael Vick to fill the void.

The New York Jets supplanted Mark Sanchez on their roster with Michael Vick. The team announced both moves via Twitter in a span of 10 minutes Friday afternoon.

SB Nation NFL

Vick started the 2013 season as the starter for the Philadelphia Eagles and was doing just fine in Chip Kelly's new offense, completing 54.6 percent of his passes for 1,215 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in six games. However, the injury bug reared its ugly head again. Vick suffered a pulled hamstring in Week 5, and from there Nick Foles took over. Foles won the starting job and threw 27 touchdowns to just two interceptions while leading the Eagles to a division title.

Now in New York, where he will compete with second-year quarterback Geno Smith for playing time, Vick received a one-year deal worth $5 million.

Out for the team is Sanchez, five years after he was selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. After a strong start with the team, including trips to the AFC Championship Game in each of his first two seasons in New York, Sanchez finished with 13 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in the 2012 season and sat out the entire 2013 season with a shoulder injury.

The Jets finished 28th in total points scored in 2012 and 29th in 2013.
