Anquan Boldin signs 2-year extension with 49ers

Boldin is staying put in San Francisco after reaching a two-year extension from the team.

The San Francisco 49ers locked up wide receiver Anquan Boldin for two more years on Monday, by reaching an agreement on a new contract for the veteran, according to Boldin himself.

While the terms of the deal have not yet been officially released, Ed Werder of ESPN reports that it is a two-year deal worth $12 million for the receiver that will give him $9 million guaranteed. That’s not a terrible amount for a team that was expected to have more than $15 million in available cap room for the 2014 season.

Boldin, 33, was acquired by the 49ers in an offseason trade one year ago from the Baltimore Ravens and racked up a team-leading 85 receptions for 1,179 yards and seven touchdowns, including an additional 16 receptions for 227 yards and a touchdown in the postseason.

David Fucillo of SB Nation’s 49ers blog, Niners Nation, approves of the move to lock up Boldin for two more seasons:

A two year deal makes a lot of sense to me. Even if they paid a little extra to bring it down to two years, I like the notion of a couple years. First, it gives the 49ers some time to build up the young receivers around Boldin and Michael Crabtree. Quinton Patton gets at least one more year of learning what it takes to be an NFL receiver, and if the 49ers add a rookie or two, they have great mentors in Boldin and Crabtree.

Prior to joining the 49ers, Boldin was acquired by the Ravens in 2010 from the Arizona Cardinals via trade. Upon joining the Ravens, he signed a three-year deal worth $25 million that paid him $6 million in base salary for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 seasons. Under his new contract, Boldin will receive the same amount in average salary through the 2015 season.

Boldin has accumulated 857 receptions for 11,344 yards and 65 touchdowns in his 11-year playing career, earning three trips to the Pro Bowl.
