Browns release WR Davone Bess, per report

Cleveland has parted ways with Bess, a disappointment in 2013 as a slot receiver and return man.

The Cleveland Browns have released wide receiver Davone Bess, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bess had three years and $8.8 million remaining on the four-year deal he signed with Cleveland last offseason, but new general manager Ray Farmer decided it was time to move on. By releasing Bess, the team saves no money this season as his entire salary was guaranteed, but will recoup $2.875 million in both 2015 and 2016.

Cleveland was hoping that Bress could provide a dangerous return man and a slot receiver with some wheels, but none of that materialized. Last season, Bess caught only 42 passes for 362 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Both his receptions and yardage were career-lows, along with his 19 yards on punt returns.

Bess has also had off-the-field issues before, being arrested back in January for allegedly assaulting a law enforcement officer at an airport, per ESPN. The officer reportedly he believed Bess was under the influence of a narcotic during the altercation.
