Will Hill facing suspension, ‘livid’ Giants will likely part ways, according to report

The New York Giants will likely part ways with talented young safety Will Hill, who is facing his third suspension in as many seasons.

Will Hill is facing a drug-related suspension for a third consecutive season, and this time the New York Giants aren't likely to forgive the safety, according to a report.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, the Giants are “livid” with Hill and will likely part ways with the third-year safety regardless of the results of his upcoming appeal. The move will leave the Giants with a potential need at safety, although as Ed Valentine of Big Blue View explains, the team’s insurance moves have made the expulsion of Hill a possibility:

I have always said the Giants needed a Plan B if they were going to carry the unreliable Hill. This is why it was critical to re-sign Stevie Brown. Why they added free agent Quintin Demps. Why the talk about cutting Antrel Rolle in a salary cap move was foolish. You also wonder if it puts safety in play at some point in the 2014 NFL Draft. As for Hill, the Giants have been extraordinarily patient with the young man. If he is suspended again it's hard to imagine the Giants not cutting ties with him. No matter how talented he is, and he is immensely talented, you can't keep giving chances to a player you can't depend on.

Whatever the actual substance used in this instance, it’s clear that Hill has violated the league’s substance-abuse policy, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. This means that Hill is in for a suspension that could span from six games to a full season. The league has been cracking down on these cases lately, and the fact that Hill is a repeat offender does not bode well for him.

Hill previously told reporters that his 2012 suspension was for testing positive for Adderall, while his 2013 suspension was for marijuana.

In two seasons with the Giants, Hill has appeared in 24 games and made nine starts, all in 2013. When he was in the lineup he played very well, earning the second-best grade among all safeties by Pro Football Focus in 2013, behind only Devin McCourty of the New England Patriots.
